Chiropody (pronounced similarly to "chiropractor") is the assessment of the foot, as well as treatment and prevention of disorders and diseases affecting the foot.
This is achieved by use of therapeutic modalities, surgical, orthotic and/or palliative care.
Completing a specialized program in Chiropody (also known as Podiatric Medicine) involves an extensive theoretical background in anatomy, pathophysiology, biomechanics, sports medicine and pharmacology, as well as clinical experience.
A registered Chiropodist is considered a foot specialist because they are trained to understand the foot, and its relation to the entire body in greater depth than other medical professionals. Chiropodists share this responsibility with only Podiatrists. Learn the difference between the professional titles here.
The term "chiropody" is not as universally understood as most other medical professions, therefore it is not only important to explain who we are, but also, what we do. For more details about some of the services provided by Chiropodists, click here.
Chiropodists who have completed the pharmacological training within the Chiropody program are able to prescribe oral anti-inflammatories and antibiotics as well as topicals (antifungal, antibiotics and corticosteroids). In addition to this, Chiropodists are also able to inject controlled substances into the foot such as local anaesthetics and corticosteroids.
Soft tissue surgeries are also within the scope of Chiropody. This includes nail surgery, cyst drainage and removal, tendon surgeries and surgical wart removal.
Chiropodists are primary health care professionals, and a referral is not needed from a doctor to schedule an appointment.
